Visiting Netaji's family in Vellore

, in India

This weekend Marcin, Bryan and I visited our office boy Netaji in Vellore. A friend of Netaji's came along too and acted, more badly than well, as our interpreter. Netaji only speaks about 20 words of English, but it was still always very pleasant talking to him.

Netaji's family welcomed us very warmly, even though they didn't speak a word of English. Netaji and his brother support the family with their salaries (Netaji about €50 and his brother at Hyundai about €80 a month). The family is particularly proud of their TV, which was promptly demonstrated to us. There was no running water, but there was an outhouse and a well in the garden. The whole house had exactly one bed, which was immediately offered to us (we couldn't refuse). Since three guys in a fairly small bed is a bit cramped, I set up camp on the floor next to Netaji's grandmother. She was a bit confused by our visit, though, and stared at us the whole time. In the night she got up and climbed into bed with the two boys. Bryan got the fright of his life…

The next morning we were proudly shown around the neighbourhood. Then we set off and visited a few temple complexes, including the Golden Temple.
